The major change in our application this year is that we will no longer accept Early Decision applications. After much consideration, the University of Delaware Admissions Committee has decided to eliminate its binding Early Decision admission plan. We will instead notify all of our freshman applicants by mid-March.
Early Decision had allowed students to apply by November 1 and hear a decision by December 15th. In return, students confirmed that Delaware was their first-choice college and agreed that, if admitted, they would withdraw their other college applications and send in their enrollment deposits by January 15th. Eliminating Early Decision means that all of our admitted freshmen will now have until May 1st to accept or decline our offer of admission.
While Early Decision has the advantage of letting students hear much sooner, it also has significant drawbacks, and in recent years the Admissions Committee has become increasingly concerned about them. Families with financial need and students with outstanding academic records are at a disadvantage since Early Decision programs force them to make a decision without being able to compare other colleges' financial aid and scholarship awards. We found it equally troubling that, even though we assured them otherwise, many students still felt pressured into applying Early Decision because they believed that it would enhance their chances of gaining admission.
We want students to choose the University of Delaware, but we want this to be a considered and thoughtful choice, a choice that you make without pressure or undue haste. We, in turn, want to be able to review all of our candidates in light of the entire applicant pool, and, yes, we would like to do it without the pressure and haste that Early Decision deadlines impose. Eliminating Early Decision allows us to give every application the full attention and careful reading that it deserves.
