AREA OF EMPHASIS AT DELAWARE

The Elementary Teacher Education (ETE) major is designed to prepare students to become certified teachers in Elementary (K-6) and Special Education or Middle School English or Middle School Mathematics or Middle School Science or Middle School Social Studies. Each student chooses two areas of certification. Students complete courses in general studies, content concentrations and professional studies. The general studies area provides students with a broad liberal arts background in social sciences, natural sciences, mathematics, English/linguistic and fine arts. In addition, students complete a concentration in English, mathematics, general science or social studies. The professional studies coursework includes the foundations and methodology of education as well as special education courses if the student chooses special education as a certification option. The Elementary Teacher Education program gives students a quality liberal arts education as well as a strong foundation in the methodology of teaching. This major provides students with individual professional advisement and personal attention by faculty, yet offers the diversity and enrichment afforded by the larger University community.
