Exercise Science is a major that provides students with a strong biological and physical science-based foundation complemented by individual specialty courses in each student’s concentration area of interest. Students in this major acquire the skills and knowledge demanded by professional employers and graduate schools in related areas.

AREA OF EMPHASIS AT DELAWARE

The Department of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Sciences offers a major in Exercise Science leading to a Bachelor of Science for students who are interested in the scientific aspects of exercise and sport. Students in the Exercise Science major choose a concentration in Biomechanics and Motor Control or Exercise Physiology. Each concentration features a strong base of general education courses in English, communication, humanities, mathematics, and social and natural sciences. Students in the Biomechanics and Motor Control concentration develop a fundamental understanding of the mechanics of the human body and its movements. This concentration prepares students for professional positions in a Gait Analysis Laboratory or for graduate study in Physical or Occupational Therapy or a related field of Exercise Science. In Exercise Physiology, students study the integration of the body’s physiological systems in the performance of exercise, work, and sport activities. This concentration prepares students to pursue advanced degrees in Physical or Occupational Therapy, Medicine, graduate programs in Exercise Physiology, or professional opportunities in the Sports Medicine/Sport Science field, including Cardiac Rehabilitation.
