East Asia is one of the most dynamic regions of the world and home to the two oldest living civilizations (China and Japan). The East Asian Studies Program therefore focuses equally on the contemporary developments as well as the cultural past of the region, which we broadly define to include China, Japan, Korea, and the many countries of Southeast Asia. The relevance of the past to the present is particularly evident here, and we emphasize the study of history, culture, and current trends. Issues concerning society (social structures, for example), ethnicity, gender, political and economic potentials, international relations and trade, imperialism, and regionalism are integral parts of our pursuit. East Asian Studies equips our students with the knowledge and tools to think and work in a fastdeveloping world. AREA OF EMPHASIS AT DELAWARE The East Asian Studies Program is supported by the University of Delaware’s strong commitment to interdisciplinary and international studies. It offers a B.A., a B.A. Honors, a Minor with Language, and a Minor without Language. The B.A. and the B.A. Honors in East Asian Studies prepare undergraduate students for careers as East Asian specialists. They provide students with training in East Asian history, politics, economics, philosophy, religion, literature, the arts, and culture, as well as the languages of particular countries in the region (e.g., China or Japan). Students will acquire a unique cultural perspective of the target country or countries, combining several disciplines into a sharply defined major. All students are encouraged to participate in a study abroad program in East Asia.
