The study of foreign languages makes possible communication among peoples of different linguistic and cultural backgrounds and fosters intercultural understanding. Since language is the primary means by which cultural perspectives are expressed and social interactions are shared, students of foreign languages and literatures are able to develop cultural insights, linguistic and literary sensitivity, and an awareness of other peoples’ world views that are not available in any other way. Through knowledge of another linguistic system and appreciation of the interdependence of language and culture, speakers of foreign languages are also able to view their native language and culture objectively and to allow that understanding to inform their communication with people from other cultures.
