History illuminates the human condition. It provides the context for defining one’s place in the world and gives meaning to our endeavors against the background of our heritage. Without a historical perspective, we have little understanding of the past that has shaped us or the future that lies ahead.

AREA OF EMPHASIS AT DELAWARE

The Bachelor of Arts in History offers students a number of ways to focus on the study of the past. Students may select a broad major in history, or choose to concentrate in American, European, Global, or Policy history. Together with the Department of English, the History Department administers an additional concentration in journalism. The Bachelor of Arts program in History and Classics, French, German, Russian, or Spanish is designed for students who want to combine a comprehensive background in history with the study of a foreign language. Study-abroad options are offered by the University that enhance the degree. Students wishing to teach at the secondary level may pursue the Bachelor of Arts in History Education. Students supplement their study of history with a core of education courses. This degree prepares the graduate for a secondary teaching certificate.
