AREA OF EMPHASIS AT DELAWARE

Freshmen enter as Medical Technology Interest majors. In order to enter the major at the end of the sophomore year certain criteria are required: a minimum 2.00 GPA for the first 4 semesters, minimum 2.00 GPA for prerequisite courses in chemistry and biological sciences, and completion of at least 60 credit hours, including the prerequisite courses. Admission to the junior/senior major is determined by academic achievement. Students who meet the standards are admitted to the major in descending order of grade point average until the 26 spots in the junior class are filled. In the past, all sophomores with a 2.5 or better GPA have been successful in gaining admission to the junior/senior major. Graduates in Medical Technology earn a Bachelor of Science degree and also may qualify for a minor in Biological Sciences if they meet certain criteria. Students opting to attend medical or dental school may want to adopt the Premedical Option of the Medical Technology curriculum. This option provides the required courses so students can successfully apply to quality professional schools. Students choosing the Premedical Option should show above-average academic aptitude and must recognize the rigorous schedule required to successfully complete the curriculum. Students follow the Medical Technology curriculum with the following changes: Calculus is substituted for the mathematics requirement and two semesters of Organic Chemistry are required instead of Elementary Organic Chemistry and Elementary Biochemistry. Two semesters of Introductory Physics are also required.
