Psychology is the study of the basic processes of the mind and the brain, and the behavior they produce. Psychologists may be involved in basic research aimed at understanding principles of cognition, emotion, motivation, sensation, perception, and social interactions. Psychologists also may apply these principles to understanding and intervening in social problems.

AREA OF EMPHASIS AT DELAWARE

The Psychology Department offers courses in four major areas, and in psychology education. Behavioral neuroscience concerns the structure and function of the brain and its relation to behavior; Clinical psychology concerns the description and explanation of maladaptive processes in humans and the design and assessment of interventions for those processes; Cognitive psychology concerns the "risks" by which humans store and process information and perform mental operations such as memory, attention, perception, and learning; Social psychology concerns the study of human attitudes and actions in social settings, including the family, workplace, schools and neighborhoods. Psychology education involves a firm grounding in the scientific discipline of psychology combined with training in the principles and practices of education. The department provides majors with an understanding of the principles of behavior, of the scientific methods used to derive and refine those principles, and of appropriate ways in which to apply such knowledge. Students may elect to major in psychology or psychology education. Psychology education majors take a core of education courses in addition to student teaching in the senior year. Students are equipped to teach psychology in secondary education.
